Protection for Adult Ears

Whether you are a musician, work in construction, near sirens or gunfire often, or like your music really loud on full volume, you may be at risk of causing hearing loss or ear damage over time.

Some might not realize at the moment, but hearing is a gift and should be protected.

Did you know after high blood pressure and arthritis,  hearing loss is the third most common chronic physical condition? In your ear, there are tiny of thousand cells, called hair cells. They are responsible for picking up different frequencies and sending the signal to the brain where it is processed. Over time these hair cells, tend to break, and the older you get the harder it is to hear. Noises when reached at 85 decibels or higher can be hazardous to hearing.

How loud is too loud?

According to E-Home Recording Studio, here is a  guideline for decibels

  • Breathing sounds:                                           10 dB
  • Whispering:                                                      20 dB
  • Normal conversation:                                     40 dB
  • Background noise at a restaurant:               60 dB
  • Listening to the radio or watching tv:         70 dB
  • Garbage disposal:                                            80 dB
  • Jackhammer:                                                    100 dB
  • A threshold of pain:                                        130 dB
  • Jet engine:                                                         150 dB

Avoid Loud Noises

The best way to avoid loud noises at events such as concerts and parades are too stay away from the sound-producing source. Try and limit the length of exposure to loud sounds.

Turn the Volume Down

When watching television, movies, or listening to music on the radio, have the volume on an average sound. Turning the volume too high can cause hearing damage over time.

Keep Ears Dry

It’s important to keep ears dry after a swim or bathing. Excess moisture in the ear can allow bacteria to enter and attack the ear canal leading to a painful ear infection.
